Chapter Twelve

When he sat down at the table, Chris had assumed that dinner at the Robertsons’ home would be very pleasant and most likely very tasty, as well as a rather quick, rather quiet affair meant to feed the body as well as the soul.

Instead, the humor-laced conversation around the table actually lasted for several hours.

The rancher caught himself smiling broadly a number of times at what was being said. In addition, Chris really couldn’t remember the last time he had enjoyed himself to this extent.

It wasn’t just Roe who made him feel this bright and sunny inside, although she was responsible for a very large part of his feeling like this. In reality it was actually the entire family who contributed to this feeling of overall general wellbeing and contentment.

The triplets’ mother, Rita, smiled as she looked across the table, taking both Chris and his clean dinner plate into account. Pleased, Rita Robertson had to admit that she had hardly seen the young rancher’s fork moving, but it had to have been exceptionally fast.

“Would you like to have another serving of roast beef, Christopher?” she asked the rancher. When Chris protested that he didn’t want to be responsible for cleaning them all out of food, Roe’s mother said, “I’m sure that Rosa has set aside the usual leftovers for Pop to use for his midnight snack, so there is still plenty of food to go around.”

Mike sighed as he shook his head. “There you go again, Rita, giving away all my secrets,” Mike said, pretending to complain to his daughter-in-law.

“I’m sure that Christopher was not about to accuse you of harboring some sort of secret plan,” Rita told her father-in-law with an amused laugh.

Chris was all but beaming with pleasure as he spoke to his host and hostess. “Please tell Rosa that I thought dinner was absolutely magnificent.”

Mike laughed. “Oh, I think after all these years of making the girls salivate while she was cooking, Rosa knows all she has to do is to bring out a meal that she’s prepared and she would have the girls’ mouths watering.”

Rita gave her father-in-law a long, penetrating look. “Just the girls?” she asked pointedly, her meaning very clear.

Mike shrugged as he innocently glanced around the table. “Well, I guess you could include their other halves as well,” the girls’ grandfather allowed magnanimously.

Roe tilted her head as she looked back at her grandfather. “Can you say that again, Pop?” she requested innocently. “I missed seeing your nose growing that time,” the veterinarian said, “And I really hate missing that.”

Mike pretended to scowl at Roe as his features deliberately assumed a frown. “Very funny, little girl.”

“She’s not a little girl, Grandpop,” Vikki told him as she raised her voice and spoke up, proudly informing the man of this small piece of information. Jerking her thumb at her chest, she said, “I am.”

Vikki never failed to tickle the triplets’ grandfather whenever she pointed something out for the older man’s attention.

“Yes, you’re right. My mistake,” Mike admitted.
